Rana Bhagwan Das was born on December 20, 1942, in Qamber Shahdadkot district, Sindh in a Hindu family. He has been the Superintending Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He has done Masters in Islam with Law. Justice Rana Bhagwan Das was the first judge from the Hindu community in the Supreme Court, he had a very good reputation and was always uncontroversial throughout his service. Rana Sahib also wrote poetry and recited Natia poems.
Rana Bhagwan Das started practicing law in 1965 and joined the judiciary after just two years of practice. He was appointed as a civil judge. After twenty-seven years of serving in the subordinate courts, he was promoted as a judge in the Sindh High Court. On February 4, 2004, he was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court. He had the distinction of being the first Hindu judge of the Supreme Court. By challenging his appointment, a position was taken that a Hindu cannot be a judge, which petition was rejected by the Sindh High Court. Rana Bhagwan Das was also appointed as Acting Chief Justice several times.
The Bar Association of Pakistan considers Justice Rana Bhagwan Das to be a noble and principled judge.
Rana Bhagwan Das passed away on February 23, 2015 in Karachi. He was undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Karachi for a heart condition.
